أخبرني أبو الحسين محمد بن أحمد بن تميم القنطري، حدثنا أبو قلابة، حدثنا أبو عاصم، أخبرنا عبد الحميد بن جعفر، عن صالح بن أبي عريب، عن كثير بن مُرَّة، عن عوف بن مالك الأشجعي: أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ خرج عليهم وأَقْناءُ مَعلَّقةٌ، وقِنوٌ منها حَشَفٌ، ومعه عصًا، فطَعَنَ بالعصا في القِنْو، قال: "لو شاءَ ربُّ هذه الصدقة فتصدَّق بأطيب منها، إنَّ صاحب هذه الصدقةِ يأكلُ الحَشَفَ يومَ القيامة"، ثم أقبَلَ علينا فقال: "أما والله يا أهل المدينة لَتدَعُنَّها مُذلَّلةً أربعين عامًا للعوافي " قلنا: الله ورسوله أعلم، ثم قال رسول الله ﷺ: "أتدرون ما العوافي؟ " قالوا: لا، قال: "الطيرُ والسباع" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to them while clusters of dates were hanging, and one of those clusters was of poor, dried-up dates. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had a staff (stick) with him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) poked that cluster with the staff and said: "If the owner of this charity had wished, he could have given something better than it in charity. Indeed, the owner of this charity will eat poor dates on the Day of Resurrection." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said: "Beware! O people of Madinah, by Allah, you will leave it (Madinah) just like that for forty years to the birds and beasts." We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know what is meant by al-awafi?" The Companions said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means the birds and the beasts of prey."

(1) إسناده حسن من أجل شيخ المصنف وصالح بن أبي عريب. أبو قلابة: هو عبد الملك بن محمد الرَّقاشي، وأبو عاصم: هو الضحاك بن مخلد.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of the author's (al-Hakim's) shaykh and "Salih bin Abi 'Arib".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Qilabah is "'Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad al-Raqashi", and Abu 'Asim is "al-Dahhak bin Makhlad".
وقد سلف عند المصنف برقم (3163) من طريقين آخرين عن أبي عاصم.
Note / Clarification: This narration has passed with the author under number (3163) through two other routes from Abu 'Asim.
