It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the Battle of Tabuk, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated in a small leather tent. I passed by, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard my voice and said: "O Awf bin Malik, come in." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, all of me or part of me?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, come in, all of you." He said: So I entered, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Awf, count six things before the Hour." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what are they?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The death of the Messenger of Allah." Hearing this, Sayyiduna Awf began to weep. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: one." I said: "One." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The conquest of Bayt al-Maqdis; say: two." I said: "Two." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And a death that will spread in my Ummah as 'qu'as', that is, neck-breaking fever, spreads among sheep; say: three." I said: "Three." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And the wealth of the world will be opened up for the people, until a man will be given a hundred dinars and will be displeased with it, considering it little; say: four." I said: "Four." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And there will be a trial that will leave no house of the Muslims that it does not enter; say: five." I said: "Five." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And there will be a truce between you and Banu al-Asfar, that is, the Romans; then they will come to you under eighty (80) banners, with twelve thousand soldiers under each banner; then they will betray you, even concerning the child in a pregnant woman's womb." The narrator said: When the year of the plague of Amwas came, Awf bin Malik said to Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to me: Count six things before the Hour; three of them have occurred and three remain. Sayyiduna Mu'adh said: There is an appointed term for them, but five trials have overshadowed you; whoever lives to see any of them and is able to die, let him die: the spread of cursing one another from the pulpits; the wealth of Allah, that is, state stipends, being given out on the basis of lies and slander; the shedding of blood unjustly; the severing of ties of kinship; and a man waking up in the morning not knowing whether he is rightly guided or astray.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "'Ubayd Allah".
Note / Clarification: This (the word "Abi") has dropped out of the manuscripts. There is no narrator named "Sa'id bin Hilal"; rather, he is "Ibn Abi Hilal".
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) this word has been corrupted into "ka-'iqas"; the correction was made from manuscripts (K) and (M).
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the words are: "thamanin ghayat kull ghayayah"; but this is not preserved, and "ghayayah" has no place here, as Abu 'Ubayd said in "Gharib al-Hadith" (2/ 87). Abu Ahmad al-'Askari likewise mentioned it in "Tashifat al-Muhaddithin" (1/ 355) and said: Most (hadith scholars) narrate it as "thamanin ghayah" (with a single ya'). Whoever narrates it thus (ghayah) says: "ghayah" means "a banner" (rayah). Whoever narrates it as "ghayayah" (with two ya's) says: it means "a cloud". And whoever narrates it as "ghabah" (with the one-dotted ba') says: it means "a thicket / forest" (ajamah).
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts other than (M) it is written "wa al-bunyan", which is a corruption.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All its narrators (to the last of them) are thiqah, but there is doubt about "al-Sha'bi" ('Amir bin Sharahil) having heard from 'Awf bin Malik. Thus Abu Hatim al-Razi said, as found in his son's book "al-Marasil" (596): "It is not possible that he heard from 'Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i."
Grading: We say: The first part of the hadith is "sahih", having been narrated from 'Awf through multiple routes. See numbers (6460) and (8500).
Important point: As for the second part, we have not found it with anyone other than the author (al-Hakim).
