It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Dharr, what will you do when people are struck by such hunger that you will not have the strength to go from your mosque to your bed, nor from your bed to your mosque?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be chaste (that is, do not stretch out your hand to anyone)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What will you do when people die in such great numbers that the place of a grave will be obtained in exchange for a slave (al-wasif)?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Be patient." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What will you do when people advance (to fight one another) until Ahjar al-Zayt in Madinah is drowned in blood?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to those to whom you belong." I said: And if he will not leave me alone? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you fear that the glint of the sword will overwhelm you, then throw the edge of your cloak over your face; he will carry away your sin and his own, and become one of the people of Hell." I said: Should I not take up arms? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you would become his partner (in the sin)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim). Bukhari recorded it from the narration of Hammam from Abu Imran, and Hammad bin Zayd added al-Mush'ath bin Tarif in its chain between Abu Imran al-Jawni and Abdullah bin al-Samit, with an addition in the text as well, and Hammad bin Zayd is more reliable and firmer than Hammad bin Salamah.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The word written in the text (al-Sadawwari) is taken from manuscript (K); in the other manuscripts it had been corrupted into "al-Sadusi". Technical note / Defect ('illah): "al-Sadawwari" is a nisbah to one of the villages of Marw called "Sadawwar" or "Sadiwar", as found in al-Sam'ani's "al-Ansab" and Yaqut's "Mu'jam al-Buldan". This narrator Ahmad bin Ibrahim is known as "al-Bukhti"; Ibn Makula mentioned him in "al-Ikmal" (1/ 503) and declared him thiqah.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "ja'a".
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this has been corrupted into "hatta yaghzu ashab". And "Ahjar al-Zayt" is the name of a place in Madinah near the market known as "al-Zawra'".
Grading: Its chain is "sahih" through the shaykh "Muhammad bin 'Ali al-San'ani", and it has passed through this same route with the author (al-Hakim) under number (2698).
Grading: But through the shaykh "al-Hasan bin Halim" this chain is weak, because of "Sa'id bin Hubayrah". Abu Hatim al-Razi said: He is not strong, and Ibn Hibban accused him (of wrongdoing) in "al-Majruhin". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, he is "mutaba'" (that is, he is not alone; there is corroboration for him).
Reference / Source: Thus Ibn Hibban (5960) recorded it through the route of 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from Hammad bin Salamah, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: It occurs thus in the manuscripts, but it appears there is a corruption in it, because the author's (al-Hakim's) following statement is apparently about explaining the narration of "Hammad from Abu 'Imran", not the narration of "Hammam from Abu 'Imran". Moreover, Imam al-Bukhari did not record this hadith in his "Sahih" through any route.
