Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8369

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The pen has been lifted from three kinds of people: from the sleeper until he wakes up, from the ma'tuh (the feeble-minded or insane) until he regains his reason, and from the child until he grows up."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih and its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah), but the narration of al-Hasan al-Basri from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is "mursal". Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": sahih, it contains irsal. Discussion of it has already passed under no. (962).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/956) and al-Nasa'i (7306) narrated it via Affan bin Muslim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (956) narrated it from Bahz bin Asad, and al-Tirmidhi (1423) via Bishr bin Umar, both of them from Hammam bin Yahya. Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: the hadith of Ali is "hasan gharib" by this route. It has been narrated from Ali from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) through several chains.... Al-Hasan al-Basri lived in the time of Ali and met him, but we do not know of his having heard from Ali.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1183) narrated it via Sa'id bin Abi Arubah, from Qatadah.
Details of the narration: Yunus bin Ubayd narrated it from al-Hasan, but there was disagreement over whether it is marfu' or mawquf. Hushaym, as recorded by Ahmad (940), narrated it from Yunus, from al-Hasan, from Ali as "marfu'".
Details of the narration: Whereas Yazid bin Zuray', as recorded by al-Nasa'i (7307), narrated it from Yunus, from al-Hasan, from Ali as "mawquf". Grading: And he (al-Nasa'i) declared it more likely to be correct (awla bi al-sawab) than the marfu' version!
