It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer of a woman who has reached puberty is not accepted without a head-covering (scarf)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but they did not record it, probably because of a disagreement in the chains from Qatadah.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is strong (qawi). Technical note: Hammad refers to Ibn Salamah. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (641) narrated it from Muhammad bin al-Muthanna, from Hajjaj bin Minhal, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (42/25167 and others), Ibn Majah (655), al-Tirmidhi (377) and Ibn Hibban (1711) narrated it by various routes from Hammad bin Salamah. Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan". 3/ 219. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hammad bin Zayd also corroborated Hammad bin Salamah (al-Muhalla of Ibn Hazm 3/219).
(Note / Clarification): "Salat ha'id" (the prayer of a menstruating woman) refers to a woman who has reached the age of puberty. "Khimar" is the cloth that covers the head.
