Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This addition is taken from al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this isnad is "hasan" because of Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar; however, he has been corroborated. Technical note / Defect ('illah): (The narrator) Abu Mu'awiyah is Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated by Imam Ahmad 12/ (7436), Muslim (1687), Ibn Majah (2583) and al-Nasa'i (7317) via several routes from Abu Mu'awiyah, with this same isnad. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated by al-Bukhari (6783) and (6799), Muslim (1687) and Ibn Hibban (5748) via al-A'mash. Note / Clarification: Al-Hakim's including it (in the Mustadrak) is an oversight on his part. 21/ 456. Note / Clarification: Al-A'mash said (in the first narration of al-Bukhari): They (the Companions and Successors) held that (the "egg" in the hadith means) the iron helmet (which is on the head of the fighter), and regarding the "rope", they held that it is a rope worth several dirhams. Ibn Hibban also said something similar to al-A'mash's statement in his "Sahih" 13/ 58. See further "Fath al-Bari" 21/ 456.
