حدَّثنا أحمد بن كامل بن خَلَف القاضي، حدَّثنا عبد الملك بن محمد بن عبد الله الرَّقَاشي، حدَّثنا أبو عتَّاب سهل بن حماد، حدَّثنا المختار بن نافع، عن يحيى بن سعيد بن حيَّان (1)، عن أبيه، عن علي أنَّ النبي ﷺ قَطَعَ في بيضةٍ قيمتُها عشرون دِرهمًا (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cut off a hand for the theft of a baydah (an egg-shaped iron helmet) whose value was twenty dirhams.
This hadith is sahih al-isnad (its chain is authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) قوله: "بن حيان" تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: عن عباد.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The words "bin Hayyan" in the text have been corrupted in the manuscripts into "'an Abbad".
(2) إسناده ضعيف من أجل المختار بن نافع، وبه ضعّفه الذهبي في "التلخيص".
Grading: Its isnad is da'if (weak) because of al-Mukhtar bin Nafi', and on that basis al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi declared it weak in "al-Talkhis".
وأخرجه البزار في "مسنده" (807)، وابن عدي في "الكامل" 6/ 445، والدارقطني في "السنن" (3437) من طرق عن أبي عتاب سهل بن حماد، بهذا الإسناد. وعندهم جميعًا: أنَّ البيضة من حديد، وأنَّ قيمتها واحد وعشرون درهمًا. وقال ابن عدي: وهذا الحديث يعرف بمختار بن نافع هذا من رواية أبي عتاب عنه. يعني أنه تفرَّد به.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was narrated by al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (807), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" 6/ 445 and al-Daraqutni in "al-Sunan" (3437) via Abu Attab Sahl bin Hammad, with this same isnad. In all of them the wording is: "The egg was (a helmet) of iron, and its value was twenty-one (21) dirhams."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Adi said: This hadith is known only through this al-Mukhtar bin Nafi', from the narration of Abu Attab from him. That is, he (al-Mukhtar) is alone in narrating it.
وأخرج عبد الرزاق (18975)، وابن أبي شيبة 9/ 470، والبيهقي 8/ 260 من طرق عن جعفر بن محمد، عن أبيه محمد الباقر، عن علي: أنه قطع يد سارق في بيضة من حديد ثمنها ربع دينار.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abd al-Razzaq (18975), Ibn Abi Shaybah 9/ 470 and al-Bayhaqi 8/ 260 narrated via several routes from Ja'far bin Muhammad (al-Sadiq), from his father Muhammad al-Baqir, from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): that he cut off the hand of a thief for (stealing) an iron helmet whose price was a quarter (1/4) of a dinar.
ورجاله ثقات لكن الباقر لم يدرك عليًا.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), but (Muhammad) al-Baqir did not live in the time of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
