It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a Jewish man and a Jewish woman who had committed adultery, both of them being married, were brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). They asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) to judge concerning them, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the judgment of stoning concerning them, and they were stoned in front of the mosque in the area of Banu Ghanm. When the Jew felt the blows of the stones, he bent over his female companion so that he might shield her from the stones. And this was a proof (of truthfulness) from Allah for His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): that man bending over her to shield her.
This hadith is sahih on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. Perhaps someone unacquainted with the science of hadith might imagine that the narrator named Isma'il al-Shaybani is unknown (majhul), but that is not so, because Amr bin Dinar has narrated from him.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "qiyamuhu ilayha yaqiha al-hijarah" appears like this in the handwritten manuscripts and yields no clear meaning. The correct wording is what is found in Musnad Ahmad and Ibn Hisham: "wa-kana dhalika mimma sana'a Allahu li-rasulihi (peace and blessings be upon him) fi tahqiq al-zina minhuma" (and this was among what Allah arranged for His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, so that the adultery of the two of them could be established). Grading: This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and this particular chain is "hasan". Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/2368) narrated it from Ya'qub and Sa'd (the sons of Ibrahim bin Sa'd), and Ibn Hisham in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (1/566) from Ziyad bin Abdullah al-Bakka'i; these three narrate it from Muhammad bin Ishaq with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (1329) and Muslim (1699): The Jews brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a man and a woman of theirs who had committed adultery, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order, and the two of them were stoned near the place of funeral prayers by the mosque. Note / Clarification: Regarding the words "fa-jana'a 'alayha", Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah": that is, he bent over her and leaned upon her in order to shield her from the stones.
