It is reported from Imam al-Sha'bi that he was asked: Did you see the Commander of the Faithful, Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)? He said: I saw him; the hair of his head and beard was white. It was asked: Do you remember anything from him? He said: Yes, I remember that he flogged Shurahah on Thursday and stoned her on Friday, and he said: "I flogged her according to the command of the Book of Allah and stoned her according to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."
This chain is sahih (authentic), although in the first chain there is a disagreement about whether Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud heard from his father.
Note / Clarification: In the handwritten manuscripts the pronouns were written in the masculine form (rajamahu, jaladtuhu, rajamtuhu); we have recorded the text that agrees with the sources that transmit it, and that is the correct form.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Sha'bi (Amir bin Sharahil) heard nothing from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) other than this hadith, as al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (449), and al-Sha'bi himself stated this explicitly; for this reason Imam al-Bukhari narrated from him only this one hadith of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/716, 839, 942, 978, 1185, 1190, 1210, 1317), al-Bukhari (6812) and al-Nasa'i (7102, 7103) narrated it through various routes from al-Sha'bi.
