Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8228

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person will always remain in latitude with regard to his religion as long as he does not commit the shedding of sacred blood (an unjust killing)."

Grading of the chain: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (9/5681) narrated it from Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim, and al-Bukhari (6862) from Ali (whose lineage is not given, but Ibn Hajar identified him as Ali bin al-Ja'd); both of them from Ishaq bin Sa'id, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (6863) narrated it through Ahmad bin Ya'qub, from Ishaq bin Sa'id, as "mawquf" (as the words of Ibn Umar), and its wording is: "Among the entangling affairs (warratat, ruinous matters) from which there is no way out for whoever throws himself into them is shedding sacred blood unlawfully."
Analysis: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "Fath al-Bari" (9/22): Al-Isma'ili claimed that this second narration (the mawquf one) is an error, but he did not explain the reason for the error. I think the reason is that Ahmad bin Ya'qub is alone in it, for Abu al-Nadr Hashim bin al-Qasim, Muhammad bin Kunasah and others narrated it from Ishaq bin Sa'id with the first wording (as marfu').
