Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8225

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When morning comes, Iblis spreads out his armies and says: 'Whoever leads a Muslim astray today, I will place the crown on him.' So one of them comes and says: 'I kept after him until he disobeyed his parents.' Iblis says: 'He may soon start treating them kindly.' Then another comes and mentions (some other sin). Then another comes and says: 'I kept after him until he divorced his wife.' He says: 'He may well marry again.' Then another comes and says: 'I did not leave him until he committed shirk (associated partners with Allah).' He says: 'Yes, you are the one (who did a great deed)!' Then another comes and says: 'I stayed after him until he committed murder.' Iblis says: 'Yes, you are the one!' And he places the crown on him."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Manuscript variants: In manuscript (B) this name is corrupted into "al-Zuhri".

Manuscript variants: In manuscripts (Z), (K) and (B) there is a blank space here the size of two or three words, and the words "fa-yaqulu: lam azal bihi hatta" have dropped out of manuscript (M).

Grading of the chain: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note: Sufyan al-Thawri's narration from Ata' bin al-Sa'ib is from before the latter's (Ata's) memory deterioration (ikhtilat). However, there is disagreement among those narrating from Sufyan over whether this hadith is "marfu'" or "mawquf", as will come; yet Sufyan has been corroborated in narrating it as marfu' (attributing the hadith to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri (in the chain) is "Muhammad bin Abd Allah", and Abu Abd al-Rahman is "Abd Allah bin Habib bin Rabi'ah al-Sulami al-Muqri'".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6189) narrated it via Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami, from Muhammad bin Abd Allah al-Zubayri, with this same chain.
Technical variation: Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn contradicted al-Zubayri: he narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri as "mawquf" on Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (i.e., as the Companion's own statement); this narration is in Ibn Abi Shaybah (13/387).
Corroborating chains: Similarly, Fudayl bin Iyad narrated it in Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah" (8/128), and Ibrahim bin Tahman in Qiwam al-Sunnah's "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (1240); both of them narrated it from Ata' bin al-Sa'ib as "marfu'" to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). However, it has not been stated explicitly whether the narration of either of them from Ata' was before or after his memory deterioration.
