Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading of the chain: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1/437, 509) and Abu Dawud (4502) narrated it from Sulayman bin Harb, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Also Ahmad (437, 468), Ibn Majah (2533) and al-Tirmidhi (2158) narrated it through various routes from Hammad bin Zayd. Imam al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan".
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (3468) narrated it via Muhammad bin Isa al-Tabba', from Hammad bin Zayd. And (the narrator) paired Abd Allah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah with Abu Umamah.
Technical note: Imam al-Bukhari said (as al-Tirmidhi quoted from him in "al-Ilal al-Kabir" 595): The hadith of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari on this topic is from Abd Allah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah, from Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), as his own "statement" (mawquf).
Criticism and praise (jarh wa ta'dil): Abu Hatim said, as found in "al-Ilal" (1351): Ibn al-Tabba' made a mistake; the hadith of Abd Allah bin Amir is not marfu', rather it is "mawquf".
Analysis: We say: Al-Tahawi also narrated it thus in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (after no. 1802) via Abd Allah bin Salih, (from) al-Layth bin Sa'd, from Yahya bin Sa'id, from Abd Allah bin Amir bin Rabi'ah: that they were with Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) in the house (under siege), and when he heard that they (the rebels) intended to kill him, he said: "I do not know of anything that makes the killing of a believer lawful except disbelief after faith, or adultery after being married, or killing a soul without (the killing of another) soul."
Discussion among the hadith scholars: Ibn Abi Hatim says: I asked my father: Which of the two is more likely? He said: "I do not know anyone who corroborated Hammad bin Zayd in narrating it as marfu'." I said: So in your view the "mawquf" narration is more likely? He said: "Yes."
Research rejoinder: We say: Abu Hatim thus said that no one corroborated Hammad bin Zayd in narrating it as "marfu'", yet Imam al-Bukhari, as found in "Ilal al-Tirmidhi" (595), narrated it from Dawud bin Shabib, from Hammad bin Salamah, from Yahya bin Sa'id as "marfu'". And al-Tirmidhi said after it: "This hadith was narrated from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari as 'marfu'' by Hammad bin Salamah and Hammad bin Zayd, whereas the others narrated it from Yahya bin Sa'id as 'mawquf'."
Supplement: We say: This hadith is also reported as "marfu'" through routes other than Abu Umamah's narration from Uthman.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (1/452) and al-Nasa'i (3506) narrated it via Abd Allah bin Umar (the Companion of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)), Ahmad (3/1402) via Mujabbar, and al-Nasa'i (3507) via Busr bin Sa'id; all three narrated it from Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) as "marfu'".
Supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Abd Allah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (6878) and Muslim (1676).
