It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I love you, the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Truly, by Allah?" He said: By Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then prepare a shield for poverty, for poverty reaches the one who loves us faster than a flood flowing down from a height."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): except that no narration of 'Abd Allah bin Abi Talhah from Abu Dharr is known (i.e. there is a suspicion of a break in the chain). We found no one other than the author who recorded this hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a report from 'Abd Allah bin Mughaffal in al-Tirmidhi (2350) and al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1471), and its chain is weak.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from Abu Hurayrah in Ibn Majah (2448).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains 'Abd Allah bin Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi, and he is matruk.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from Anas bin Malik in al-Bazzar (3595) and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Shu'ab" (1470).

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from Ibn 'Abbas in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan" (6/119).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its chain contains al-Husayn bin Qays al-Rahabi, whose nickname is "Hanash", and he is matruk.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri in Ahmad (17/11379), and its chain is weak because it is mursal. See the commentary on it there.
Linguistic note: The word "tijfafan" (with kasrah on the ta' and sukun on the jim): the author of "al-Nihayah fi Gharib al-Hadith" (1/182) said: it is the armour and equipment with which a horse is covered to protect it from wounds. "Faras mujaffaf" means a horse that has a tijfaf on it. Its plural is "tajafif", and the (initial) ta' in it is extra.
Note / Clarification: Mulla 'Ali al-Qari said in "Mirqat al-Mafatih" (8/3287): "tijfaf" is used here as a metaphor for patience, because it covers poverty just as the tijfaf covers the body from harm.
