It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate coarse and rough food and wore rough clothing; he (peace and blessings be upon him) wore woollen garments and put on mended sandals. Imam al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked what "rough food" meant, and he said: "Coarse barley flour, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) could not swallow without the help of a sip of water."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The text between the brackets does not occur in the manuscripts, nor in Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (833), nor in the copy of al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" that we have. However, it is quoted in Ibn al-Mulaqqin's "Mukhtasar" (6/3040) that al-Dhahabi said: "It is not authentic; it contains Nuh bin Dhakwan, who is very weak (wahin), and Yusuf bin Abi Kathir is majhul." It is likewise in the printed text in the margin of the Indian edition. This requires that Nuh bin Dhakwan was present in the copy that al-Dhahabi relied on in "al-Talkhis", and he is likewise present in the source works that recorded it.
Grading: Its chain is utterly weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Baqiyyah bin al-Walid is weak, his shaykh Yusuf bin Abi Kathir is majhul (not known), and Nuh bin Dhakwan is weak and munkar al-hadith. Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3348, 3556) recorded it from Yahya bin 'Uthman bin Sa'id al-Himsi, from Baqiyyah bin al-Walid, with this chain.
