Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8121

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the Muslims begin to hate their scholars, make a display of building up and adorning their markets, and marry for the sake of amassing dirhams and dinars, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will afflict them with four trials: drought of the times, oppression from the ruler, treachery from those in charge of judgements, and the assault and dominance of the enemy."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, provided that Abdullah bin Abi Mulaykah heard from the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: This word did not occur in the manuscripts; we added it from "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", "Ithaf al-Maharah" (14534) and the narration of al-Daylami.

Note / Clarification: This is how it is in the narration of "al-Mustadrak", whereas the narration of al-Daylami has "ta'alabu", and that is more fitting. "Al-ta'alub" is the tafa'ul form of the verb "alaba", and it means: to gather / band together.

Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 1. Ibn Abi Mulaykah ('Abd Allah bin 'Ubayd Allah): his narration from 'Ali is mursal, since there are about 77 years between their deaths; that is why al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": munqati'. 2. Muhammad bin 'Abd Rabbih (Ibn Sulayman al-Marwazi): Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and said: "He errs and contradicts others." Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": "Ibn 'Abd Rabbih is not known", and he judged the hadith to be munkar. Al-'Iraqi followed him in "Takhrij al-Ihya'" (4/198).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hasin: he is 'Uthman bin 'Asim bin Husayn.
Reference / Source: Al-Daylami recorded it in his "Musnad" (as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Ghara'ib al-Multaqatah" 274) through the route of Musa bin Muhammad bin Musa al-Ansari, from Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin 'Abd Rabbih, from Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Daylami also recorded it (as in "al-Ghara'ib" 2955) through the route of Muhammad bin Harun bin 'Isa al-Hashimi, from Muslim bin Bakkar, from Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash.
Details of the narration: Its wording is: "My Ummah will always have a fortress of well-being set over it, and calamities will be repelled from them, as long as they honour their elders, revere their scholars, fulfil their trusts and support their weak. But when they treat their great ones as fools, hate their scholars and humiliate their weak, Allah will strike them with incurable diseases, and five doors will be opened for them: a door of humiliation before the enemy, so they will not be given victory; a door of poverty, so they will not become free of need; a door of greed, so they will not be content; a door of hatred, so they will not love one another; and a door of arrogance, so they will not be shown mercy."
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Iraq attributed it to him in "Tanzih al-Shari'ah" (2/395) and said: "It contains Muslim bin Bakkar and others whom I do not know, and Allah knows best."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: its bane (main defect) is Muhammad bin Harun bin 'Isa al-Hashimi, for he was accused of fabrication, as al-Khatib al-Baghdadi stated in the biography of al-Hasan bin Qahtabah in "Tarikh Baghdad" (8/415), and Ibn 'Asakir in the biography of al-Husayn bin Ahmad al-Ba'labakki in "Tarikh Dimashq" (18/24).
