Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8118

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was saying on the pulpit (while delivering a sermon): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while hungry, would (at times) not find even inferior-quality dates to fill his stomach.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" because of Simak (Ibn Harb) and Qays bin Unayf, and Qays has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6341) recorded it via Muhammad bin Abi Bakr al-Muqaddami, from Abu 'Awanah, with this same chain. And Ahmad (30/ 18356, 18357), Muslim (2977/ 34-35), al-Tirmidhi (2372) and Ibn Hibban (6341) recorded it through various routes from Simak bin Harb.
Grading: Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Shu'bah differed from the group: he narrated it from Simak bin Harb, from al-Nu'man, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab, thus making it part of the "Musnad of 'Umar". It was recorded thus by Ahmad (1/ 159, 353), Muslim (2977/ 36), Ibn Majah (4146) and Ibn Hibban (6342).
Grading: When his son asked Abu Hatim al-Razi, as in "al-'Ilal" (1811), which of the two narrations is more correct, he said: "Shu'bah has the better memory." (His son) said: "But no one corroborated him!" He said: "Even if no one corroborated him, Shu'bah has the best memory of them all." Al-Bazzar said something similar in his "Musnad" (237).
Note / Clarification: "الدَّقَل" means poor-quality, dry dates.
