Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 1. Zafir bin Sulayman is "layyin al-hadith" (soft in hadith). 2. Muhammad bin 'Uyaynah: Abu Hatim al-Razi said: he is not to be relied upon as proof; he brings munkar reports; whereas al-'Ijli declared him thiqah and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (as quoted by al-Suyuti in "al-La'ali' al-Masnu'ah" 12/27) said: "The view of two hafiz scholars differed on it, and they took two opposite paths: al-Hakim declared it sahih in "al-Mustadrak", while Ibn al-Jawzi declared it very weak (wahin), included it in "al-Mawdu'at" (982) and accused Muhammad and Zafir of it. Yet Muhammad has been corroborated, and Zafir is not accused of lying. The correct view is that it is judged neither fabricated nor sahih, and if it were corroborated it would be hasan."
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (4278), Abu Muhammad bin Abi Shurayh in "al-Ahadith al-Mi'ah al-Shurayhiyyah" (46), al-Sahmi in "Tarikh Jurjan" (83), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (3/253), al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (151, 746), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10058), al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (5/16), al-Shajari in "al-Amali" (2/29), Abu al-Husayn al-Tuyuri in "al-Tuyuriyyat" (572) and Abu Tahir al-Silafi in "al-Mashyakhah al-Baghdadiyyah" (10), through two routes from Zafir bin Sulayman, from Muhammad bin 'Uyaynah, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl bin Sa'd, without any doubt.
Important point: Al-Tabarani said: No one narrated this hadith from Muhammad bin 'Uyaynah except Zafir.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a report from Ibn 'Abbas with Ibn 'Asakir in "Mu'jam al-Shuyukh" (619); after it he said: its text and chain are gharib. We say: it contains more than one unknown and weak narrator.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its first part has a shahid (supporting report) from the hadith of Jabir with al-Tayalisi (1862), and through his route Abu al-Shaykh recorded it in "Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin bi-Asbahan" (244), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (10057) and al-Shajari in "al-Amali" (2/296).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains al-Hasan bin Abi Ja'far al-Basri, who is weak, and his shaykh Abu al-Zubayr Muhammad bin Muslim is a mudallis and narrated it with 'an'anah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from the hadith of 'Ali, with al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (4845) and "al-Saghir" (704), and with Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (3/202).
Important point: Al-Tabarani said: It is not narrated from 'Ali except with this chain. Abu Nu'aym said: It is gharib as a connected hadith of Ja'far from his forefathers; we wrote it only through this route.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: its chain contains al-Hasan bin al-Husayn al-'Alawi, and he is not known.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And (another shahid) from the hadith of Anas bin Malik in Ibn Hibban's "al-Majruhin" (3/44).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It contains Mudrik bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Tufawi; Ibn Hibban said: he narrates from Humayd al-Tawil what he is not corroborated on; the Basrans narrated from him; I consider it preferable to avoid the reports he narrates alone. Then he cited this hadith of his.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The second part of this hadith has a shahid from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah in al-'Uqayli's "al-Du'afa'" (454) through the route of Dawud bin 'Uthman al-Thaghri, and in Tammam's "al-Fawa'id" (1104) and Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (23/81) through the route of Abu al-Minhal Hubaysh bin 'Umar al-Dimashqi.
Details of the narration: Both of them (Dawud and Abu al-Minhal) narrate it from al-Awza'i, from Abu Mu'adh, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-'Uqayli said about this al-Thaghri: he narrates falsehoods in Egypt from al-Awza'i and others. Then he said: "This is narrated from al-Hasan al-Basri and others as their own words, and it has no musnad (marfu') basis." We say: as for his corroborator Abu al-Minhal Hubaysh al-Dimashqi, he is majhul (unknown); only one person narrated from him. Moreover, Abu Mu'adh, who narrates from Abu Hurayrah: we found no biography for him, so he too is majhul.
Grading: Perhaps it is because of these routes that al-Hafiz al-'Iraqi graded it hasan, as in al-Sakhawi's "al-Maqasid al-Hasanah" (691). (1) Its chain is sahih, and it is repeated at no. (2723).
