Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Clarification: From the words "عن عباس" up to here, we have established the text from the margin of manuscript (K) (where it is marked as corrected) and from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis"; it is also present in al-Bayhaqi's narration in his "Sunan" from al-Hakim, whereas it had dropped out of manuscripts (Z), (M) and (B).
Grading: It is sahih as mawquf, as a statement of Ibn 'Abbas, and there is no harm in the narrators of this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, there is disagreement over it from 'Abbas bin Abdullah bin Ma'bad: Sulayman bin Bilal and Abd al-'Aziz al-Darawardi narrated it from him as "marfu'", whereas Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, Wuhayb bin Khalid and (Muhammad) Ibn 'Ajlan differed from them and kept it "mawquf" on Ibn 'Abbas, giving the chain as: 'Abbas bin Abdullah bin Ma'bad, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas. These (who made it mawquf) have better memory and are greater in number. This is the view preferred by Abu Zur'ah al-Razi, as in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal" (2099).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (2/ 133) from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Du'a'" (208) via Ja'far bin Sulayman al-Nawfali, from Abd al-'Aziz bin Abdullah; and Ibrahim bin Abdullah has dropped out of his chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (1491), and through his route al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" (9/ 471), al-Tabarani in "al-Du'a'" (2178) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Da'awat al-Kabir" (314) recorded it via Abd al-'Aziz al-Darawardi, from al-'Abbas bin Abdullah bin Ma'bad bin 'Abbas.
Details of the narration: As for the mawquf narrations:
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (3247) and Abu Dawud (1490), and through his route al-Diya' in "al-Mukhtarah" (469), recorded it via Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah; Abu Dawud (1489), and through his route al-Bayhaqi in "al-Da'awat" (313), and al-Diya' (468) via Wuhayb bin Khalid; and Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (6/ 1939) via Muhammad bin 'Ajlan. All three of them (Sufyan, Wuhayb and Ibn 'Ajlan) narrate it from 'Abbas bin Abdullah, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas as "mawquf". After it Abd al-Razzaq said: Ibn Jurayj also mentioned it from Ibn 'Abbas.
Important point: We say: This supports those who held it to be mawquf.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (5/ 3152) recorded via Shu'bah, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, that he heard a man from Banu Tamim say: I asked Ibn 'Abbas about a man pointing with his finger like this, i.e. in prayer, and he said: "That is ikhlas (sincerity)."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The name of the Tamimi man (in this narration) is "Arbadah", and he is majhul (unknown).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (2/ 133) recorded it via al-A'mash, from Abu Ishaq, from al-'Ayzar bin Hurayth, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is a mistake of "Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar", one of its narrators, and the route of Shu'bah is the correct one in this.
Grading: Al-Dhahabi objected to it, saying: It is utterly munkar!
