Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8102

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty has made the whole world little, and of that (little world) only a very small part now remains. The likeness of what remains of the world is that of a pool whose clear water has been drunk and only its muddy water is left."
Its chain of narration is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This narration is sahih as "mawquf", while this chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its weakness is due to Abd al-'Aziz bin Abdullah al-Simsar, for whom we could not find a biography, and he has no narration in "al-Mustadrak" other than this one. This (narrator) is not Abd al-'Aziz bin Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Warraq, as some scholars thought; for the latter (al-Warraq) left his homeland Khurasan and settled in Egypt before al-Hakim was born, and died there in 345 AH, whereas al-Hakim began travelling outside his homeland in 341 AH and never entered Egypt. Abd al-'Aziz al-Simsar has been contradicted in narrating it as "marfu'", and what is correct is that this report is "mawquf" as a statement of Ibn Mas'ud himself, as will be explained.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Asim is Ibn Bahdalah. Abu Wa'il is Shaqiq bin Salamah al-Asadi.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud recorded it in "al-Zuhd" (129) from Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki, and Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Qisar al-Amal" (123) via Zayd bin 'Awf; both of them narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain as "mawquf" on Ibn Mas'ud.
Grading: What is preserved (mahfuz) is that it is mawquf; it has already passed with al-Hakim in detail at number (425) via al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il, from Ibn Mas'ud, as "mawquf" with a sahih chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-A'mash was corroborated in narrating it as mawquf by Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir in al-Bukhari (2964), and by Zubayd bin al-Harith al-Yami in Ibn Battah's "al-Ibanah al-Kubra" (1/ 187); both of them narrate it from Abu Wa'il.
