Book of Leading the Prayer and Congregational Prayer
إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فِي رَحْلِهِ ثُمَّ أَدْرَكَ الصَّلَاةَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ فَلْيُصَلِّهَا فَإِنَّهَا لَهُ نَافِلَةٌ
When one of you has prayed at his dwelling and then finds the prayer with the imam, let him pray it, for it will be voluntary for him

حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا بحر بن نَصْر بن سابق الخولاني قال: قُرئَ على عبد الله بن وهب: أخبركَ مالكُ بن أنس. وأخبرنا عبد الرحمن بن حمدان الهَمَذاني بها، حدثنا إسحاق بن أحمد الخزَّاز، حدثنا إسحاق بن سليمان قال: سمعت مالك بن أنس يحدِّث عن زيد بن أسلم، عن بُسْر بن مِحجَن - رجل من بني الدِّيل - عن أبيه: أنه كان جالسًا مع رسول الله ﷺ فأُوذِنَ بالصلاة، فقام رسول الله ﷺ فصلَّى ثم رَجَعَ ومِحجَنٌ في مجلسه كما هو، فقال له رسول الله ﷺ: "ما مَنَعَك أن تصلِّيَ مع الناس، ألست برجلٍ مسلمٍ؟ " قال: بلى يا رسول الله، ولكني يا رسول الله كنت قد صلَّيتُ في أهلي، قال: "فإذا جئتَ فصلِّ مع الناس، وإن كنت قد صلَّيتَ" (1)
Sayyiduna Mihjan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when the call to prayer was given. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up, led the prayer and came back, while Mihjan remained sitting in his place. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "What prevented you from praying with the people? Are you not a Muslim?" He said: "Of course, O Messenger of Allah! But I had already prayed with my family." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you come (to the mosque), pray with the people, even if you have already prayed."

(1) حديث حسن، بسر بن محجن - وإن لم يرو عنه غير زيد بن أسلم قد توبع.
Grading: (1) The hadith is hasan.
Technical note: Although only Zayd bin Aslam narrated from Busr bin Mihjan, he has been corroborated.
وأخرجه أحمد 26/ (16395)، والنسائي (932)، وابن حبان (2405) من طريق مالك، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (26/16395), al-Nasa'i (932) and Ibn Hibban (2405) narrated it via Malik with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد (16393) و (16394) من طريقين عن زيد بن أسلم، به.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (16393, 16394) narrated it via two routes from Zayd bin Aslam.
وأخرجه بنحوه أحمد 29 / (17890) من طريق ابن إسحاق، عن عمران بن أبي أنس، عن ¤ ¤ حنظلة بن علي الأسلمي، عن رجل من بني الدِّيل قال: صلَّيتُ الظهر في بيتي … إلخ، وإسناده حسن.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (29/17890) likewise narrated it through the chain Ibn Ishaq from Imran bin Abi Anas from Hanzalah bin Ali al-Aslami from a man of Banu al-Dil, who said: "I prayed Zuhr in my house," and so on.
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
