Grading: (2) Its chain is strong (qawi). Technical note: Abu Khalid al-Ahmar is Sulayman bin Hayyan. Al-Daraqutni also narrated it in his 'Sunan' (1108), and via him al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in 'al-Mukhtarah' (2093), through al-Hasan bin al-Khadir from Abu al-Ala' Muhammad bin Ahmad with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated something similar in 19/(12255) and 21/(13396) through Abu Khalid al-Ahmar with the wording: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would turn his face towards us before saying the takbir and say: 'Close in together and straighten up, for I see you from behind my back.'" Reference / Source: Likewise Ahmad narrated it in 19/(120119), 20/(12884), 21/(13777), (13778) and (14054), as did al-Bukhari (719, 725), al-Nasa'i (890) and Ibn Hibban (2173), via several routes from Humayd. (667 - 671). Details of the narration: The command to straighten the rows was narrated from Anas by several narrators in different wordings; see these narrations and their documentation in 'Sunan Abi Dawud' (667-671).
