Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih and its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim bin Sa'd and Mu'awiyah bin Yahya al-Sadafi, narrating from al-Zuhri, named the narrator "Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Ma'iz", whereas Muhammad bin al-Walid al-Zubaydi, narrating from al-Zuhri, named him "Ma'iz bin Abd al-Rahman". On the other hand, Ma'mar, Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah, Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Mujammi' and 'Uthman bin 'Umar, narrating from al-Zuhri, called him "Abd al-Rahman bin Ma'iz". According to al-Bayhaqi, the narration of these latter is the preponderant (more correct) one. Three people narrated from this narrator, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat"; moreover he has been corroborated.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (24/ 15418), Ibn Majah (3972), al-Nasa'i (11777 and 11778) and Ibn Hibban (5700) recorded it through various routes from Ibrahim bin Sa'd, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (6397) via Mu'awiyah bin Talhah, from al-Zuhri, in the same way.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (15419), al-Tirmidhi (2410), al-Nasa'i (11776) and Ibn Hibban (5699) recorded it via Ma'mar; al-Darimi (2753) via Ibrahim bin Isma'il bin Mujammi'; Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Zuhd" (4) via 'Uthman bin 'Umar bin Musa; and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4574) and "al-Adab" (292) via Shu'ayb bin Abi Hamzah. All four of them narrate it from al-Zuhri, from Abd al-Rahman bin Ma'iz.
Reference / Source: It is in "Jami' Ma'mar" (20111) from al-Zuhri, that Sufyan bin Abdullah al-Thaqafi said: I said: Narrate to me a hadith by which I may benefit; and he mentioned it from Sufyan al-Thaqafi as mursal.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (5702) and al-Tabarani in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1792) recorded it via Muhammad bin al-Walid al-Zubaydi, from al-Zuhri, from Ma'iz bin Abd al-Rahman, in the same way.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (15416), Muslim (38) and Ibn Hibban (942) recorded it via 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr; and Ahmad (15417) and al-Nasa'i (11425 and 11426) via Abdullah bin Sufyan al-Thaqafi; both of them narrate it from Sufyan al-Thaqafi.
Details of the narration: The narration of 'Urwah is abridged and does not mention the tongue. Also, in the second narration of al-Nasa'i there is an inversion (qalb) in the name of Abdullah bin Sufyan.
Reference / Source: Ibn Wahb recorded it in "al-Jami'" (300 - Abu al-Khayr), and through his route Ibn Hibban (5698), from Yunus bin Yazid, from al-Zuhri, from Muhammad bin Abi Suwayd, that his grandfather Sufyan bin Abdullah al-Thaqafi said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me of a matter to which I may hold fast; and he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned this hadith.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Yunus was corroborated in this by 'Uqayl bin Khalid, narrating from al-Zuhri, as Abu Hatim al-Razi said, as in "al-'Ilal" (2304). Then he said: "The hadith of 'Uqayl and Yunus is more likely (ashbah); they understand al-Zuhri better."
Grading: We say: Rather, the narration of these six (Ma'mar and the others) is closer to what is correct, and this is supported by what al-Bayhaqi said in "al-Shu'ab" (4577): "It reached me from Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli that he said: What is preserved (mahfuz) in our view is what Ma'mar, Shu'ayb and al-Nu'man bin Rashid narrated, and I do not think the hadith of Yunus is preserved, since Ma'mar, Shu'ayb and al-Nu'man agree against it." He said: "In the hadith of Ibrahim bin Sa'd there is an indication that it is closer to their narration than to the narration of Yunus."
