It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, when a servant falls ill, Allah Almighty reveals to His angels: 'O My angels, I have bound My servant with one of My bonds. If I take his soul, I will forgive him; and if I grant him health, he will rise in a state that no sin remains upon him.'"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts the word is "أعافيه" (I grant him well-being), whereas the correct and well-known reading (al-jaddah) is what we have established (in the text).
Grading: Its chain is very weak (wahin) because of 'Ufayr bin Ma'dan. For this reason al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "al-Talkhis". Note / Clarification: Abu al-Yaman is al-Hakam bin Nafi'. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "al-Marad wa al-Kaffarat" (25), and through his route al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (9453), from Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Sahl. Also al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" (7701), and through his route al-Shajari in his "Amali" (2/ 278), from Ahmad bin Abd al-Rahim bin Yazid al-Hawti. Both of them (Muhammad bin Sahl and Ahmad al-Hawti) narrate it from Abu al-Yaman with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Shahin recorded it in "al-Targhib fi Fada'il al-A'mal" (396) via Ja'far bin al-Zubayr al-Shami, from al-Qasim bin Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Umamah, as marfu': "When the believing servant falls ill, Allah reveals to His angel: Write for My servant the reward of what he used to do in health and ease, since I have kept him occupied (with illness); so it is written for him." Technical note / Defect ('illah): But (bear in mind that in this chain) Ja'far is matruk (abandoned). Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "al-Marad wa al-Kaffarat" (23), al-Ruyani in his "Musnad" (1270), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (7485) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1595), Tammam in "al-Fawa'id" (1582), Abu Nu'aym in "Riyadat al-Abdan" (3), al-Bayhaqi in "al-Shu'ab" (9452) and al-Shajari in "al-Amali" (2/ 281), via Sulayman bin Habib al-Muharibi, from Abu Umamah, as marfu': "There is no servant who is struck down by an illness (i.e. falls ill) but that Allah raises him up from it purified." Grading: And its chain is jayyid (good). (8052) Important point: See the hadith of 'Uqbah bin 'Amir which has already passed at number (8052).
