Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8063

Abdullah bin Buraydah narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a man addresses a hypocrite as 'O master' (or 'Sir'), he has indeed angered his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if, because 'Uqbah bin 'Abd Allah al-Asamm is a da'if narrator.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Although Qatadah corroborated him, as Imam al-Bukhari said in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/12), Qatadah's hearing from 'Abd Allah bin Buraydah is not established,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): especially as he is a mudallis and did not state explicitly that he heard it from 'Abd Allah bin Buraydah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (38/22939), Abu Dawud (4977) and al-Nasa'i (10002) recorded it through Qatadah, from 'Abd Allah bin Buraydah.
General principle: The word "ya sayyid" (O master) in the hadith comes here unrestricted, but some narrations restrict it: the prohibition applies when the hypocrite is called master with reference to the believers ("our master"). Thus in the narration of Ahmad and al-Nasa'i: "Do not call the hypocrite 'our master' (sayyidana), for if he is your master, you have angered your Lord."
