Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8052

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The deeds of every day are sealed (in the evening). So when the believer falls ill, the angels say: 'O our Lord! You have held back (through illness) such-and-such a servant of Yours.' The Most Generous Lord says: 'Record for him deeds like those he used to do (when healthy) and seal them, until he recovers or passes away.'"
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name has been distorted into "Hakim".

Grading: This hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi,
Technical note / Defect ('illah): while this particular chain is da'if because of Rishdin (i.e. Ibn Sa'd al-Misri), and for this reason al-Dhahabi declared it defective in "al-Talkhis"; however, he has been corroborated. Abu al-Khayr refers to "Marthad bin 'Abd Allah al-Yazani".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (28/17316) narrated it through 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from Ibn Lahi'ah, who said: Yazid bin Abi Habib narrated to me, with this same chain.
Grading: This chain is "hasan",
Technical note / Defect ('illah): because 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak's narration from Ibn Lahi'ah is "salih" (acceptable); see the rest of its takhrij there.
Note / Clarification: It has already passed with the author (al-Hakim) (no. 7862) through 'Abd Allah bin Wahb from 'Amr bin al-Harith, with a different wording, and its chain is sahih.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Supporting the hadith of 'Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with him) (as a shahid) is the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Bukhari (2996), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a servant falls ill or travels, there is written for him the like of what he used to do when resident and healthy."
Reference / Source: See the hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) in "Musnad Ahmad" (11/6482); there we have mentioned the hadiths of this chapter. Also see the hadith of Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him), which will come later with the author (no. 8069).
