It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were sitting with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked for something to drink. Water mixed with honey was brought to him. When he brought it close to his mouth, he wept so much that he made his companions weep too. Then they all fell silent, but his weeping did not stop. He wept again so much that his companions thought they might not be able to ask him anything. Then he wiped his eyes, and the people said: O Caliph of the Messenger! What made you weep? He said: I was (once) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I saw that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was pushing something away from himself, although there was no one else with him (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: O Messenger of Allah! What are you pushing away from yourself? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This world was presented to me in a form, and I said to it: 'Get away from me.' Then it came back and said: 'If you have escaped from me, those who come after you will never escape from me.'"
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is da'if because of 'Abd al-Wahid bin Zayd, Technical note / Defect ('illah): he is Abu 'Ubaydah al-Basri, and his shaykh Aslam al-Kufi is "majhul" (unknown); 'Abd al-Wahid bin Zayd is alone in narrating from him, and al-Bazzar said: He is not well known, as al-Dhahabi also said in "al-Mizan". Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya narrated it in "Dhamm al-Dunya" (11), Ibn Abi 'Asim in "al-Zuhd" (187), al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (44), al-Marwazi in "Musnad Abi Bakr" (52), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/30) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Shu'ab" (10039 and 10112), through various routes from 'Abd al-Samad bin 'Abd al-Warith, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Hilyah" (6/164) through Qurrah bin Habib, from 'Abd al-Wahid bin Zayd, with this same chain.
