Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8002

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unays al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The greatest of the major sins are: associating partners with Allah, disobedience to parents, and 'al-yamin al-ghamus' (the ruinous false oath). And when a person swears a false oath by Allah and inserts into it (something untrue) even as much as the wing of a mosquito, Allah Almighty will make it a black spot in his heart on the Day of Resurrection."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Hasan li-ghayrihi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain except Hisham bin Sa'd, since there is some weakness ("lin") in his memory; however, he is taken into account in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (25/ 16043) and Imam al-Tirmidhi (3020) narrated it by the route of Yunus bin Muhammad al-Mu'addib with this same chain. Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that it is "hasan gharib".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Wahb bin Baqiyyah narrated it via Khalid bin Abdullah al-Tahhan from Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq al-Madani, and there is disagreement from him in this narration in several forms (wujuh).
Details of the narration: The first form is like Hisham bin Sa'd's narration; it was narrated by al-Bardiji in "al-Kaba'ir" (p. 173), and by his route al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (9/ 3), via Aslam bin Sahl (known as Bahshal) from Wahb bin Baqiyyah.
Details of the narration: The wording of the narration is: "Avoid the major sins, for they are seven: associating partners with Allah, killing a soul unjustly, fornication, consuming usury, consuming the property of an orphan, fleeing from the battlefield and disobedience to parents."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The second form is that a group of narrators contradicted "Bahshal": Ibn Abi Asim in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (2035), Ibn Hibban (5563) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi by the route of Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili, and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (14933) by the route of Mahmud bin Muhammad al-Wasiti, narrated it by the chain of Wahb bin Baqiyyah via Abdullah bin Unays (may Allah be pleased with him), with a meaning similar to al-Hakim's narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The third form is that Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1608), and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi by the route of Yahya bin Muhammad, transmitted it by the chain of Wahb bin Baqiyyah via Abu Umamah from Abdullah bin Unays (may Allah be pleased with him), likewise similar to al-Hakim's narration.
Important point: However this hadith is turned, it revolves around narrators in whom there is no harm (la ba'sa bihim). And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: This same narration has passed shortly before with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (7994), as the hadith of Abu Umamah bin Tha'labah (may Allah be pleased with him).
