Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and prayed in the mosque. Then he gave the greeting of salam, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And upon you. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." This happened two or three times, so he said: "I do not know what fault you found in my prayer." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prayer of any of you is not complete until he performs ablution (wudu) thoroughly as Allah has commanded: he washes his face and his hands up to the elbows, and wipes his head and his feet up to the ankles; then he says the takbir, praises and glorifies Allah, and recites whatever of the Qur'an is easy for him; then he says the takbir and bows (ruku'), placing his palms on his knees until all his joints are at rest; then he says 'Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears the one who praises Him) and stands up straight until every bone returns to its place; then he prostrates, placing his forehead firmly on the ground until every joint is at rest; then he raises his head and sits calmly, straightening his back."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim, and Imam Bukhari declared it sound in his Tarikh.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is a disagreement over it, the details of which are in the commentary on 'Musnad Ahmad' (31/18995). Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (858) narrated it from al-Hasan bin Ali al-Khallal and Ibn Majah (460) from Muhammad bin Yahya, both through Hajjaj bin Minhal with this same chain. Al-Hasan bin Ali al-Khallal paired Hisham bin Abd al-Malik al-Tayalisi with Hajjaj, while Muhammad bin Yahya's narration is abridged. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i narrated it at (726) via Abd Allah bin Yazid al-Muqri' from Hammam (bin Yahya). (221). Grading: This is the correct version, as Ibn Abi Hatim reported from his father in 'al-Ilal' (221). Reference / Source: Ahmad (18997), al-Nasa'i (1237) and Ibn Hibban (1787) narrated it via Muhammad bin Ajlan, and Ahmad (18995) and Abu Dawud (859) via Muhammad bin Amr (bin Alqamah). Details of the narration: Both of them, and with them Dawud bin Qays and Muhammad bin Ishaq (as will come), narrate it through the chain "Ali bin Yahya bin Khallad from his father from his paternal uncle Rifa'ah", in agreement with Hammam's narration.
