Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Teach me something that will suffice me in place of the Qur'an, for I do not know how to read." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Subhan Allah, wal-hamdu lillah, wa la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no power to avoid sin nor strength to do good except from Allah)." The man closed his hand into a fist and said: "This is for my Lord; what is there for me?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma ighfir li, warhamni, wahdini, warzuqni, wa 'afini' (O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, provide for me and grant me well-being)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan" by the combination of its routes.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibrahim al-Saksaki has been criticized, but he has been corroborated.
Important point: "Al-Humaydi" is Abu Bakr bin Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr bin Isa al-Makki, and "Sufyan" is Sufyan bin Uyaynah.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it at (1808) via Ibrahim bin Bashshar from Sufyan bin Uyaynah with this same chain.
Important point: Yazid Abu Khalid al-Dalani has been paired (in the chain) with Mis'ar (bin Kidam).
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in (31/19138), al-Nasa'i at (998) and Ibn Hibban at (1809) via various routes from Mis'ar (bin Kidam) with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in (31/19110) and (32/19409), as did Abu Dawud (832) and Ibn Hibban (1808), via two routes from Ibrahim al-Saksaki.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban narrated it at (1810) via Talhah bin Musarrif, and Abu Nu'aym in 'al-Hilyah' (7/113) via Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, both narrating from Abd Allah bin Abi Awfa.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In our original manuscripts of 'al-Mustadrak' it reads "min ghayrihi" (from someone other than him), whereas what Ahmad reported from Mis'ar in his 'Musnad' (19110) is: "And someone other than me made me firm in it." In Abu Nu'aym's narration (19138), Mis'ar says: "I asked Abu Khalid al-Dalani to clarify part of it for me."
