Sayyiduna Khawwat bin Jubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sleeping in the early part of the day is foolishness, sleeping in the middle of the day (the siesta, qaylulah) is an excellent habit, and sleeping in the last part of the day (after Asr) is stupidity.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: This report is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is "hasan" in corroborating chains and supporting reports, on account of Muhammad bin Sinan al-Qazzaz, and he has been corroborated.
Note / Clarification: Here "Mis'ar" means Mis'ar bin Kidam.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (9/ 114), al-Bukhari in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (1242), al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (3/ 102), al-Dinawari in "al-Mujalasah" (2046), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Tibb al-Nabawi" (155) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4407, 4408) narrated it by various routes of Mis'ar bin Kidam with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In al-Bayhaqi's first route there is no mention of Ibn Abi Layla.
Note / Clarification: "Al-khurq" (with a dammah on the kha') means ignorance and foolishness. "Al-khuluq" (with a dammah or sukun on the lam) means religion, nature and disposition. "Al-humq" (with a sukun or dammah on the mim) means lack of intellect, and the reality of foolishness is putting a thing in the wrong place despite knowing its ugliness (i.e. doing something inappropriate).
Note / Clarification: This is further clarified by the narration that Imam al-Tahawi (3/ 101) and Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4409) transmitted from Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Sleep is of three kinds: 'the sleep of khurq' (the sleep of folly), 'the sleep of khuluq' (natural sleep of good conduct) and 'the sleep of humq' (the sleep of foolishness). 'The sleep of khurq' is sleep in the forenoon (duha) when people are doing their work and seeing to their needs while this person sleeps; 'the sleep of khuluq' is the midday sleep (qaylulah); and 'the sleep of humq' is sleep that overcomes one at the times of the prayers."
