Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7992

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he returned home from a journey suddenly at night. He saw someone sleeping beside his wife, and (out of jealousy) he took up his sword. His wife immediately said: (Stop!) This is so-and-so, a woman who was combing my hair. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this incident, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not come to your families suddenly at night (so that they can prepare)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Sahih li-ghayrihi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah, but Abu Salamah (bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf) is not established to have heard from Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) (there is a break in the chain); however, this hadith is established as sahih through other routes, as will be mentioned below.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (25/ 15736), Imam al-Nasa'i in "Ighrab Shu'bah wa Sufyan" (64) and al-Ruyani in his Musnad (1499) narrated it by the route of Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it with a similar meaning in his "Musannaf" (12/ 523-524) and "Musnad" (583), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (13/ 438) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (28/ 80), via Mu'awiyah bin Hisham from Sufyan al-Thawri.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Its shahid is the narration that Abu Awanah transmitted in his "Sahih" (7534) and al-Khara'iti in "Masawi' al-Akhlaq" (801), by the route of Ali bin Harb, al-Qasim bin Yazid al-Jarmi, Sufyan al-Thawri and Muharib bin Dithar, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): "Ibn Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to his wife at night (on returning from a journey) while a woman was combing her hair; he pointed with his sword (suspecting the presence of a stranger in the dark). When this was mentioned to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a man to come upon his family suddenly (without notice) at night."
Grading: The chain of this shahid is sahih.
Important point: The basis of this hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari (1801, 5243) and Sahih Muslim (715) by the route of Muharib, but there the narration is given in abridged form.
