Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7993

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The truly forbearing one is only he who has at some time stumbled (and so gained experience), and the truly wise one is only he who is experienced."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
The Book of Etiquette (Kitab al-Adab) ends here, and the Book of Oaths and Vows (Kitab al-Ayman wa al-Nudhur) begins.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narration of Darraj Abu al-Samh from his shaykh Abu al-Haytham (Sulayman bin Amr al-Utwari) is considered weak.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (17/ 11056, 18/ 11661), al-Tirmidhi (2033) and Ibn Hibban (193) narrated it by various routes of Abdullah bin Wahb with this same chain. Imam al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan gharib", since it is known only through this route.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (565) via Sa'id bin Ufayr, Yahya bin Ayyub al-Ghafiqi, Ubaydullah bin Zahr and Abu al-Haytham, from Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), as "mawquf" (the Companion's own statement).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement over the reliability of Ubaydullah bin Zahr; however, the narration being "mawquf" is closer to the correct view.
