Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared its chain "jayyid" (good) in "Fath al-Bari" (18/ 666), on account of Muhammad bin Ajlan.
Note / Clarification: Here the narrator "Sumayy" means Abu Abdullah al-Madani (the freedman of Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman), and "Abu Salih" means Dhakwan al-Samman.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Dawud narrated it in his Sunan (5029) via Musaddad bin Musarhad with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (15/ 9662) and Imam al-Tirmidhi (2745) by the route of Yahya al-Qattan.
Grading: Imam al-Tirmidhi (may Allah have mercy on him) declared it "hasan sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan al-Thawri contradicted Muhammad bin Ajlan, as al-Bukhari mentioned in the Kuna section of "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (9/ 9); he says that Ibn al-Mubarak narrated from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Sumayy, from Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)... (the full hadith).
Important point: He related it as "mursal" (i.e. without mentioning the Companion), and in al-Bukhari's view this is "ashbah" (closer to being correct). Ibn Jurayj also narrated it, but there is disagreement in the narration from him.
Reference / Source: From Ibn Jurayj it was narrated by Nasr bin Tarif al-Bahili, in al-Baghawi's "al-Ja'diyyat" (3297), Ibn Adi (7/ 34) and Abu al-Shaykh's "Akhlaq al-Nabi" (755), and by Ali bin Asim al-Wasiti in Abu al-Shaykh (759); both of them transmit it from Sa'id al-Maqburi from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Nasr bin Tarif is a "matruk" (abandoned) narrator, while Ali bin Asim is of "hasan" level in corroborating chains and supporting reports, and his route is the best of all the routes transmitted from Ibn Jurayj.
Details of the narration: Isma'il bin Amr narrated it via Mandal, from Ibn Jurayj, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Awsat" (7452) and said that no one narrated it from Ibn Jurayj except Mandal, and Isma'il bin Amr is alone in narrating it from Mandal.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il bin Amr al-Bajali and Mandal bin Ali are both "weak" narrators, and this narration is not known as a hadith of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Reference / Source: Ibn al-A'rabi narrated it in his Mu'jam (442, 772), Abu al-Shaykh (760), Tammam in his "Fawa'id" (886) and Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (3/ 346) and "Tarikh Asbahan" (2/ 148), by the route of Ikrimah from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In its chain Muhammad bin Yunus al-Kudaymi is "muttaham" (accused of lying), so this narration cannot be relied upon.
General principle: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar says in "Fath al-Bari" (18/ 665-666): Among the etiquettes of one who sneezes is that he lowers his voice when sneezing and raises it in praising Allah (al-hamdu lillah), that he covers his face so that nothing comes out of his mouth or nose that would harm the one sitting beside him, and that he does not turn his neck to the right or left, so that he does not harm himself.
Note / Clarification: Ibn al-Arabi says: The wisdom in lowering the voice when sneezing is that raising it jolts (harms) the body's limbs. The reason for covering the face is so that, if any discharge comes out, the companion is not harmed; and if he twists his neck to protect his companion, there is a risk of a sprain or strain in the neck, and we have seen people to whom this happened.
