Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7964

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to mention Sayyidah Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) very often. I said (out of jealousy): Allah has given you a replacement for an old woman from among the old women of Quraysh (Hammad sometimes said "akhlafaka" and sometimes "a'qabaka", meaning Allah has given you better in her place), one with red gums (meaning her teeth had fallen out from old age), who passed away long ago. Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: (On hearing this) the colour of his (peace and blessings be upon him) face changed, a change I had only seen at the descent of revelation, or on his seeing clouds with thunder and lightning, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) knew whether these clouds were of mercy or of punishment.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (25171) and Ibn Hibban (7008) narrated it by way of 'Affan bin Muslim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it via Bahz bin Asad (25171) and Mu'ammal bin Isma'il (25210); both of them narrate it in the same way from Hammad bin Salamah.
Details of the narration: Imam al-Bukhari in mu'allaq form (3281) and Imam Muslim (2437) narrated by way of 'Urwah from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: Halah bint Khuwaylid, the sister of Khadijah, asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to enter, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was reminded of Khadijah's way of asking permission, which moved his heart deeply, and he said: "O Allah, it is Halah!" 'A'ishah said: I felt jealous and said: Why do you remember an old woman from among the old women of Quraysh, with red gums, who died long ago, when Allah has given you a better replacement (wife) than her!
Details of the narration: Imam Ahmad (24864) narrated by way of Masruq from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned Khadijah, he praised her in the finest terms. One day I felt jealous and said: How often you mention that one with red gums, when Allah has given you a better replacement for her! At that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has not given me anyone better than her in her place. She believed in me when people disbelieved, she affirmed me when people belied me, she comforted me with her wealth when people deprived me, and Allah granted me children through her when I was denied children by other women."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The chain of this narration contains Mujalid bin Sa'id, in whom there is weakness.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (26387) (the wording is his), Imam al-Bukhari (3817), Muslim (2435), Ibn Majah (1997), al-Tirmidhi (2017 and 3875) and al-Nasa'i (8303, 8305 and 8864) narrated it by way of 'Urwah.
Details of the narration: 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) relates: I did not feel as jealous of any wife of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as I felt of Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), and that was because I frequently heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) mention her with praise.
Important point: A similar narration has already passed with Imam al-Hakim under number (4915).
Note / Clarification: 'A'ishah's (may Allah be pleased with her) words "hamra' al-shidqayn" (red of the sides of the mouth): the word 'al-shidq' (with either a kasrah or a fathah under/over the shin) refers to the corner or side of the mouth.
Note / Clarification: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, in "Fath al-Bari" (11/ 265), quoted al-Qurtubi as saying that it refers to her being attributed old age, because when someone reaches old age while strength remains in the body, a redness inclining to brownish usually dominates his complexion. Ibn Hajar says: al-Qurtubi said so, but what is apparent is that "al-shidqayn" refers to the inside of the mouth, and it is an allusion to her teeth having fallen out, so that nothing remained inside her mouth except the red flesh of the gums. Imam al-Nawawi and other researchers stated this with certainty.
Note / Clarification: "Tama''ara wajhuhu" means that the face changed (from anger or concern). Its root meaning is the loss of freshness of the face and brightness of its complexion. It is taken from the Arab expression "makan am'ar", meaning barren land in which there is no greenery or freshness.
Note / Clarification: In "makhilat al-ra'd", the word 'al-makhilah' refers to a cloud from which rain is fully expected (i.e. a dense, rain-bearing cloud). This explanation was given by 'Allamah Ibn al-Athir.
