Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hajjaj bin Artah is alone in narrating from the narrator "Abu Matar"; although Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", Imam al-Dhahabi says in "al-Mizan": "It is not known who he is", and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar declared him "majhul" (unknown) in "al-Taqrib". As for Imam al-Dulabi's statement in "al-Kuna" (3/ 1023) that "Mis'ar" also narrated from this Abu Matar, it is his error; for the Abu Matar from whom Mis'ar narrates is "al-Juhani", who narrates from 'Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), as is clear in Imam al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (9/ 75), Ya'qub al-Fasawi's "al-Ma'rifah" (2/ 659) and "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (9/ 445).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for the Abu Matar who narrates from Salim bin 'Abdullah (i.e. the narrator under discussion), only Hajjaj (bin Artah) narrates from him. For this reason Imam al-Bukhari and Imam al-Dhahabi in "al-Muqtana" distinguished between the two (Abu Matar al-Juhani and this unknown narrator).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Imam al-Hakim's chain the name "Hajjaj bin Artah" has dropped out between 'Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad and Abu Matar, whereas Imam Ahmad and al-Bayhaqi, via 'Affan bin Muslim, correctly mentioned Hajjaj's name. The same is also reported in al-Bayhaqi (3/ 362) by way of Abu Sahl al-Qattan from Ishaq bin al-Hasan al-Harbi. Besides 'Affan, a group of other narrators also corroborated him in mentioning Hajjaj, the details of whom we have given in the takhrij of "al-Musnad".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (10/ 5763) narrated it via 'Affan bin Muslim, from 'Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, from Hajjaj bin Artah, from Abu Matar, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Tirmidhi (3450) and al-Nasa'i (10698) narrated it via Qutaybah bin Sa'id, from 'Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, from Hajjaj bin Artah, from Abu Matar.
Important point: Imam al-Tirmidhi says that this hadith is gharib and we know it only through this route.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sayyar bin Hatim, in the narration of al-Nasa'i (10697), went against this and narrated it directly from Abu Matar without mentioning Hajjaj in between. Since Sayyar is himself a "layyin" (weak) narrator, no account will be taken of this contradiction of his.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in his Musannaf (10/ 214) from Waki', and in (10/ 216) from Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both of them report from Ja'far bin Burqan that he said: It has reached us that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard severe thunder, he would … (the full hadith). Ja'far reported it as "mu'dal" (with two or more consecutive narrators dropped from the chain).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ma'mar contradicted both of them and, in his "Jami'" (20006), narrated it via Ja'far bin Burqan as a saying of Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) (mawquf), in mu'dal form.
Important point: There was some weakness in the memory of Ja'far bin Burqan.
