Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "qawi" (strong) on account of Abu Qilabah ('Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad al-Raqashi).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Quraysh bin Anas is one of the trustworthy narrators, but the hadith scholars mentioned that six years before his death his memory deteriorated (ikhtilat); however, Imam al-Bukhari clarified in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" 4/ 929 that his ikhtilat was confined to his house, meaning that he did not narrate hadith during those years, so his ikhtilat has no effect on his narrations. Ibn Hibban was harsh in this matter and said that munkar things appeared in his narration, and cited this single hadith as the example, although he is corroborated in it. Imam Ibn 'Adi did not mention him in his book "al-Kamil", despite his thoroughness in listing narrators of munkar reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for al-Hasan al-Basri's hearing from Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), it is sound, as we have explained under hadith number (151).
Note / Clarification: "Ash'ath" refers to Ash'ath bin 'Abd al-Malik al-Humrani.
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2589), al-Bazzar (4571), al-Ruyani (819) and Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" 2/ 220 narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Bashshar, and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (6935) by way of 'Ali bin al-Madini, and both of them narrate it from Quraysh bin Anas with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (4570), Abu Bakr al-Qati'i in "Juz' al-Alf Dinar" (297) and al-Tabarani (6910) narrated it by way of Ya'la bin 'Abbad, from Hammam bin Yahya, from Qatadah, from al-Hasan, from Samurah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Daraqutni declared Ya'la bin 'Abbad weak, while Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and said that he makes mistakes; so narrators like him are acceptable in corroborating chains and supporting reports. Al-Tabarani (6949) narrated it by way of 'Asim bin 'Ali al-Wasiti, from Qays bin al-Rabi', from Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki, from al-Hasan, from Samurah; although there is criticism of 'Asim, Qays and Isma'il, they are suitable for corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (4679) and al-Tabarani (7077) narrated it through the chain of Ja'far bin Sa'd bin Samurah, from Khubayb bin Sulayman bin Samurah, from his father, from his grandfather Samurah bin Jundub.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): People narrated from Ja'far, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", while Khubayb and his father Sulayman are majhul (unknown); but they can be taken as support (isti'nas) in corroborating chains and supporting reports, because this is their grandfather's hadith and they are from his household. However, where they are alone in narrating something (tafarrud), it will not be accepted. And Allah knows best.
Important point: "Al-qadd" means cutting lengthwise, and "al-sayr" is a strip cut from leather. That is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade cutting leather while holding it between two fingers, lest the blade wound the hand.
General principle: This is one of the hadiths containing guidance for the Muslim and protection of him from harm, like the hadith forbidding the handing over of an unsheathed sword, which will come later (no. 7979).
