Shubayl bin Azrah said: We were boys, and we took Qatadah, leading him by the hand, to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). When we came in to him, he said: How good this is! Then he spoke words encouraging them to seek knowledge, and that day he narrated to us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of a righteous companion is like that of a perfume seller: even if he does not give you any of his perfume, or he said: even if you do not get any of his perfume, its fragrance will still reach you."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
Grading: This hadith is sahih and its chain is jayyid (good). Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4831) narrated it through the chain of 'Abdullah bin al-Sabbah al-'Attar from Sa'id bin 'Amir. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Aban al-'Attar narrated it through the chain of Qatadah from Anas from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), found with Imam Ahmad 32/ (19615) and Abu Dawud (4829), where it is mentioned combined with the hadith likening the reciter of the Qur'an to the "utrujjah" (citron). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj corroborated Aban in narrating it from Qatadah, as reported in Ibn Hibban's "Rawdat al-'Uqala'" p. 99, with only the story of the "righteous companion". Reference / Source: Likewise, Hammad bin Salamah narrated it, with Imam al-Tayalisi (517), by way of Thabit al-Bunani from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), as a saying of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) (mawquf). (19624). Reference / Source: The two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) and other hadith scholars narrated it by way of Abu Burdah from Abu Musa. See: "Musnad Ahmad" (19624).
