Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7941

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade that a person should walk between two camels while holding their reins and leading them.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts "al-'ayrayn" is written, and what we have adopted is from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (713).

Grading: Its chain is extremely weak, because Mutahhar bin al-Haytham is "matruk" (abandoned) and Muhammad bin Thabit al-Bunani is "da'if and munkar al-hadith".
Reference / Source: Al-Ramahurmuzi narrated it in "al-Muhaddith al-Fasil" (166) through the chain of Abu Hammam al-Walid bin Shuja' from Mutahhar bin al-Haytham, with the wording: "A camel is not to be led between two people."
Note / Clarification: After it, Abu Hammam said: I heard Abu 'Asim al-Dahhak bin Makhlad say: "The two of them should not ride it together; rather, both should walk!"
Important point: We say: This contradicts the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would sometimes seat someone behind him on the camel (take him as a co-rider), as he (peace and blessings be upon him) did with Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) and other Companions.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari narrated it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 8/ 421 in mu'allaq form, al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (6905), Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" 2/ 252 in mu'allaq form, and Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" 6/ 136, through the chain of Yasar bin Muhammad from Muhammad bin Thabit.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): With al-Bazzar and Ibn Hibban the wording is: "He forbade that a slave be led between two men"; while with Ibn 'Adi this wording was corrupted into "A grave is not to be returned to between two", and with him the narrator's name was also inverted from "Yasar bin Muhammad" to "Muhammad bin Yasar", while in "al-Majruhin" this name was changed to "Bashshar". About this Muhammad bin Yasar, Imam Ibn Ma'in said that he is "nothing" (unreliable).
Note / Clarification: Imam al-Bazzar says: "To our knowledge, only Muhammad bin Thabit narrated it from Thabit al-Bunani, and only Yasar bin Muhammad from him. Abu 'Asim narrated it from Yasar, and Ibn Ma'mar and others conveyed this narration to us via Abu 'Asim."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Ibn Hibban declared this narration defective on account of Muhammad bin Thabit and said: "He narrates from his father what is not from his hadith, as if he were some other Thabit; it is not permissible to use him as proof or to narrate from him." Ibn 'Adi said: "Most of his hadiths are such that he is not corroborated in them."
