It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If I live, I will forbid naming (anyone) Barakah, Nafi' and Yasar." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and he had not forbidden these names.
Mu'ammal bin Isma'il narrated it in his hadith, and I do not know whether he said 'Rafi'' or not.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hudhayfah in the chain refers to Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi, and Abu al-Zubayr refers to Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (23/ 15164) narrated it through the route of Mu'ammal bin Isma'il alone, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (22/ 14606) narrated it through the route of Ibn Lahi'ah, and Imam Muslim (2138) and Ibn Hibban (5840, 5842) through the route of Ibn Jurayj ('Abd al-Malik bin 'Abd al-'Aziz). Both of them narrate it from Abu al-Zubayr. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (4960) narrated it through the route of Abu Sufyan Talhah bin Nafi', and Ibn Hibban (5839) through the route of Wahb bin Munabbih, similarly from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). Important point: Caution: From this hadith it (apparently) appears that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not forbid these names, whereas there are explicit hadiths prohibiting names like these. It seems that this prohibition had not reached Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him). It is established in "Sahih Muslim" (2136) and elsewhere from Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not name your servant boy Rabah, Yasar, Aflah or Nafi'."
