Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B), "'an Ibn 'Umar" is written here, whereas in manuscript (M) and Imam al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis" it is mentioned correctly.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This narration involves the issue of "idraj" (insertion); what is preserved (mahfuz) is that its first part (the prohibition of giving names such as Rabah) is the narration of Jabir directly from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with no intermediary of 'Umar, while its second part (the story of expelling the Jews) is preserved as the narration of Jabir from 'Umar, and of him from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), as Imam al-Daraqutni clarified in "al-'Ilal" (137). For further details, see al-Khatib al-Baghdadi's "al-Fasl li-l-Wasl al-Mudraj" (91). Here Abu Ahmad refers to Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah al-Zubayri, and Sufyan refers to Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: The first part of this narration was narrated by Imam al-Tirmidhi (2835) from Muhammad bin Bashshar with this same chain, and he declared it "gharib".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Tirmidhi says that Abu Ahmad narrated it as Sufyan, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, from 'Umar, whereas other narrators narrated it as Sufyan, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (without the intermediary of 'Umar). Although Abu Ahmad is a thiqah hafiz, the well-known narration among the hadith scholars is "Jabir, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)", in which 'Umar is not mentioned. Ibn Majah (3729) also narrated it through the route of Nasr bin 'Ali, from Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri.
Reference / Source: The second part of this narration was narrated by Imam Muslim (1767), al-Tirmidhi (1606), al-Nasa'i (8633) and Ibn Hibban (3753) through various routes from Sufyan al-Thawri.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (1/ 201 and 23/ 14716), Muslim (1767), Abu Dawud (3030) and al-Tirmidhi (1607) through various routes from Abu al-Zubayr (Muhammad bin Muslim bin Tadrus).
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Imam Ahmad (1/ 215), and likewise by Ibn Hibban (5841) through the route of 'Abdah bin 'Abd Allah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Both of these (Ahmad and 'Abdah), with the chain Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, from Sufyan, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, report it as a "statement" (mawquf) of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam Abu Dawud (3031) narrated it from Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal with his same chain, but he made it "marfu'" (a saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) from 'Umar.

Important point: See the discussion following this one.
Note / Clarification: The text from the words "wa akhbarana Abu 'Abd Allah al-Saffar" up to here has dropped out of manuscript (B). We have recorded "Abu Ma'mar" in the text according to manuscript (M), whereas manuscript (Z) has "Abu Ya'mar", and "Ithaf al-Maharah" (3/ 404) has "Abu Nu'aym". Ahmad bin Muhammad bin 'Isa al-Qadi narrates from both Abu Ma'mar ('Abd Allah bin 'Umar al-Muq'ad) and Abu Nu'aym (al-Fadl bin Dukayn), but we did not find any narration of Abu Ma'mar al-Muq'ad from Sufyan al-Thawri, whereas Abu Nu'aym is well known for narrating from al-Thawri.
