Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 78

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on one of his journeys, and his Companions had drawn close to one another due to fatigue, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his voice with these two verses: "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a tremendous thing. On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will be distracted from the child she nursed, and every pregnant woman will deliver her burden, and you will see people as if intoxicated, while they are not intoxicated; but the punishment of Allah is severe" [Surah al-Hajj: 1-2]. When the Companions heard this, they urged their mounts on, and they understood that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to say something important. When they had gathered around him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know which day that will be?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the day when Adam will be called: his Lord will call him and say: 'O Adam! Send forth the contingent of the Fire.' He will say: 'How many is the contingent of the Fire?' Allah will say: 'From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine to the Fire and one to Paradise.'" The narrator says: (On hearing this) the Companions despaired, until not even a smile remained on their faces. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this state, he said: "Act and rejoice; by the One in whose control is the soul of Muhammad! You are with two creations who turn whatever they are with into a multitude: Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog), and those who have perished from the children of Adam and the children of Iblis." The narrator says: With this, the people's grief was removed. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Act and receive glad tidings; by the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad! You among the people are like a mark on the foreleg of an animal, or like a mole on the flank of a camel."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two of them did not record it in full detail. In my view they left it out for fear of it being mursal, although al-Hasan al-Basri did hear from Imran bin Husayn. Most of the additions in this text are also in the narration of Ma'mar from Qatadah from Anas, which is sahih on the condition of both of them, but neither of them recorded it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and all its narrators are thiqah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Whether al-Hasan al-Basri heard from Imran bin Husayn is disputed. Imam al-Hakim affirms his hearing with certainty in several places in this book, whereas according to the majority he did not hear from him. However, al-Hasan al-Basri's narration is supported by other corroborations, as the details below will show.
Important point: This narration will come again with the author at number (3491) by way of Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Saghani, from al-Hasan bin Musa al-Ashyab.
Important point: This same narration will come at numbers (2954) and (8908 to 8910) by way of Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, and at numbers (3491) and (8910) by way of Sa'id bin Abi Arubah; both of them narrate it with the chain Qatadah, from al-Hasan, from Imran.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Abu Awanah narrated it from Qatadah in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (18/306), and Sa'id bin Bashir (who is da'if but considered in supporting reports) also transmitted it in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (18/308) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2636).
Reference / Source: Sulayman al-Taymi, narrating from Qatadah, reported it from Imran bin Husayn through "'an sahib lahu" (from a companion of his); Imam al-Tabari recorded it in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (1/399) under the Musnad of Ibn Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ma'mar contradicted all these narrators, narrating it with the chain Qatadah, from Anas bin Malik, and this narration of his is "shadh".
Important point: What is "mahfuz" (preserved, correct) from Qatadah is his narration of it as the hadith of Imran bin Husayn, as Imam Muhammad bin Yahya al-Dhuhli also stated explicitly (see the author's narration number 8907).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On the preserved version Qatadah was corroborated by Thabit al-Bunani (in al-Tabarani 18/340) and by Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an (in Musnad Ahmad 33/19884 and al-Tirmidhi 3168); both narrated it with the chain al-Hasan, from Imran.
Grading: Thabit al-Bunani is a thiqah and firm narrator, while Ibn Jud'an is da'if, but his narration is suitable for supporting evidence.
Reference / Source: Hannad narrated it in "al-Zuhd" (197) from Abdah bin Sulayman, and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (17/111) and "Tahdhib al-Athar" (1/402) and al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (18/546) by way of Muhammad bin Bishr al-Abdi, both from Sa'id bin Abi Arubah, from Qatadah, from al-Ala' bin Ziyad al-Adawi, from Imran bin Husayn.
Grading: This chain is sahih, if Allah wills; in it al-Ala' bin Ziyad al-Adawi corroborates al-Hasan al-Basri.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Ala' is one of the trustworthy Successors of Basra and is not a mudallis. Since al-Hasan al-Basri has narrations from him, as found in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'", it is possible that al-Hasan took this narration from Imran bin Husayn through al-Ala'.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The "mahfuz" version is also reported from Sa'id bin Abi Arubah, as will come with the author in the narration of Rawh bin Ubadah; most likely Sa'id had this narration in both ways, and Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is the narration of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) in Sahih al-Bukhari (3348) and Sahih Muslim (2881).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also reported from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), which will come with the author later at number (8911).
Note / Clarification: The word "al-matiyy" is the plural of "matiyyah", meaning a riding she-camel.
Note / Clarification: "Ublisu" means they fell completely silent out of grief and fear.
Note / Clarification: The words "ma awdahu bi-dahikah" mean that not a single tooth of theirs showed (i.e. they did not even smile); it is called "dahikah" because it shows when laughing.
Note / Clarification: "Raqmah" is a raised mark or sign on the foreleg of an animal.
Note / Clarification: The words "ta'ashshabu 'alayhi" mean they gathered around him and surrounded him.
Note / Clarification: The words "fa-surriya dhalika" mean that it lightened the grief they were feeling.
