It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sarihah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: After I had come to know the Sunnah, my family pushed me into harshness. We used to sacrifice one or two goats on behalf of the household, but my family said: Our neighbours think that we are being stingy (because we do not increase the number of animals).
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the word "'an" (from) has mistakenly been changed into "bin" (son of).
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The details of the narrators are: Mu'awiyah bin 'Amr (Ibn al-Muhallab al-Azdi), Za'idah (bin Qudamah), 'Amir (al-Sha'bi), and Abu Sarihah is the kunyah of the well-known Companion Hudhayfah bin Asid al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him). Reference / Source: Ibn Majah (3148) narrated it via Sufyan al-Thawri from Bayan bin Bishr, with this same chain. Note / Clarification: The narration of al-Bayhaqi (9/269) clarifies the meaning of the hadith: "After I had learned the Sunnah, my family pushed me into harshness; previously one goat used to be considered sufficient for a household, but now our neighbours call us miserly, saying that no sacrifice is due from him (because they considered it an individual obligation)."
