It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed a ram that was horned and strong; it walked in black, ate in black and looked in black (that is, its feet, its belly and the area around its eyes were black).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ja'far bin Muhammad is Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq bin 'Ali bin al-Husayn bin 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with them). Reference / Source: Abu Dawud (2796), Ibn Majah (3128), al-Tirmidhi (1496), al-Nasa'i (4464) and Ibn Hibban (5902) narrated it via various routes from Hafs bin Ghiyath, with this same chain. Ibn Hibban added the words "and drinks in black". Al-Tirmidhi called it "hasan sahih gharib", saying: we know it only from the narration of Hafs bin Ghiyath. Technical note / Defect ('illah): In "al-'Ilal al-Kabir", al-Tirmidhi reports that al-Bukhari said that he knew of no one other than Hafs bin Ghiyath who narrated this, and that Hafs is among the most accurate of them in his written record (kitab). Note / Clarification: "Al-fahil" means a male animal that is fully formed and has not been castrated. Ibn al-Athir says that a male that is productive in breeding is called "fahil". He (peace and blessings be upon him) preferred it over a castrated animal or a female for the sake of its nobility and size.
