Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7738

It is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah or Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two rams that were fat, large, black-and-white, horned and castrated. While slaughtering one of them he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allahumma 'an Muhammadin wa ahli baytihi' "O Allah, this is on behalf of Muhammad and his household," and while slaughtering the other he said: 'Allahumma 'an Muhammadin wa ummatihi man shahida laka bit-tawhid, wa shahida li bil-balagh' "O Allah, this is on behalf of that Ummah of Muhammad which bore witness to Your Oneness and to my conveying of the religion."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts had "wa-Abi Hurayrah" (and Abu Hurayrah), while the correct reading has been established in light of "Musnad Ahmad" and the other source works.

Grading: This hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi (authentic due to supporting reports), except for the word "mawjiyyayn" (castrated).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abd Allah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil is a "layyin" (weak) narrator and was inconsistent (idtirab) in this narration. Its routes and his inconsistency were discussed in "Musnad Ahmad" (25046); there, excluding the word "mawjiyyayn" from the authentication was missed, and that has been corrected here. The correct position is that the ram was "fahil" (fully formed / not castrated), as established in the next hadith from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri. Sufyan is Sufyan al-Thawri. For references see "'Ilal Ibn Abi Hatim" (1599) and "'Ilal al-Daraqutni" (1792).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (43/25886) and Ibn Majah (3122) narrated it via Abd al-Razzaq from Sufyan al-Thawri, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (43/25843) via Ishaq bin Yusuf as a narration of Abu Hurayrah from 'A'ishah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/2449), Muslim (1967), Abu Dawud (2792) and Ibn Hibban (5915) narrated via Yazid bin Abd Allah bin Qusayt, from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr, from 'A'ishah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a horned ram whose legs, belly and eyes were black. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'A'ishah, bring the knife and sharpen it with a stone." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) laid the ram down, slaughtered it and said: "In the name of Allah. O Allah, accept it from Muhammad, the family of Muhammad and the Ummah of Muhammad."
Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Reference / Source: On the chapter of the two castrated rams there is a narration of Abu al-Darda' in "Musnad Ahmad" (36/21713), but its chain is weak.
