حدَّثَناه الشيخ أبو بكر، أخبرنا عبيد بن شَريك البزَّار، حدثنا أبو الجُمَاهر محمد بن عثمان التَّنُوخي، حدثنا عبد العزيز بن محمد الدَّراوَرْدي، عن أبي ثِفَال، عن رَبَاح بن عبد الرحمن (1)، عن أبي هريرة، أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ قال: "دَمُ عَفْراء أحبُّ إليَّ من دمِ سَوداوينِ" (2).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shedding the blood of a whitish (dust-coloured) animal is dearer to me than shedding the blood of two black animals."

(1) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: عبد الله.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the name here has been corrupted and written as "Abd Allah".
(2) إسناده ضعيف، أبو ثِفال -واسمه ثمامة بن وائل بن حصين- ورباح بن عبد الرحمن- وهو ابن أبي سفيان بن حُويطب - روى عنهما جمع وذكرهما ابن حبان في "الثقات"، بينما قال أبو حاتم الرازي - كما في "العلل" لابنه (129) -: أبو ثفال مجهول، ورباح مجهول. وعدَّ البزارُ ثمامةَ مشهورًا.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group narrated from the narrators Abu Thifal (whose name is Thumamah bin Wa'il bin Husayn) and Rabah bin Abd al-Rahman (Ibn Abi Sufyan bin Huwaytib), and Ibn Hibban mentioned them in "al-Thiqat", but Abu Hatim al-Razi declared them majhul (unknown) (as in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal", number 129). However, al-Bazzar considered Thumamah a well-known (mashhur) narrator.
وأخرجه أحمد 15/ (9404) عن قتيبة بن سعيد، عن عبد العزيز الدراوردي، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (15/9404) via Qutaybah bin Sa'id from Abd al-'Aziz al-Darawardi, with this same chain.
وأخرجه عبد الرزاق (8165) عن سفيان الثوري، والبخاري في "التاريخ الكبير" 4/ 197 من طريق شعبة، كلاهما عن توبة العنبري، عن سُلمى بن عتاب، عن أبي هريرة موقوفًا. وقال البخاري عقبه: ويرفعه بعضهم ولا يصح. قلنا: وسلمى مجهول.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (8165) narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri, and al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (4/197) via Shu'bah; both of them from Tawbah al-'Anbari, from Sulma bin 'Attab, from Abu Hurayrah as mawquf.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bukhari said that some narrators narrate it as marfu', but that is not authentic. The narrator Sulma bin 'Attab is majhul (unknown).
قوله: "دم عفراء … إلخ" المقصود تفضيل الضأن على المعز الذي يغلب على لونه السواد، وليس المقصود مجرد اللون مع اتحاد النوع كما ذهب إليه بعض الشراح.
Note / Clarification: The purpose of the words "dam 'afra'" (the blood of a whitish-red sheep) is to give sheep preference over goats whose colour is mostly black; it does not mean a mere preference of colour within the same kind, as some commentators understood.
