It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded us to examine the eye and the ear (of the sacrificial animal) carefully, and not to sacrifice an animal whose ear is cut at the front, or cut at the back, or split, or has a hole in it. Abu Ishaq explained that muqabalah is one whose ear has its tip cut off, mudabarah is one from the side of whose ear something has been cut, sharqa' is one with a split ear, and kharqa' is one with a pierced ear.
All the chains of this hadith are sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it. My assumption is that this is due to an addition in the narration of Qays bin al-Rabi' from Abu Ishaq, although the two Shaykhs did not use Qays as evidence.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy) except for Shurayh bin al-Nu'man. Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group narrated from Shurayh bin al-Nu'man, and Ibn Hibban and Ibn Shahin mentioned him among the "Thiqat", but Abu Hatim al-Razi says he is close to majhul (unknown) and cannot be relied upon as proof. Also, Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i ('Amr bin Abd Allah) did not hear from Shurayh, as al-Daraqutni stated explicitly in "al-'Ilal" (380); between them is the link Sa'id bin 'Amr bin Ashwa'. Important point: Abu Ishaq was contradicted in narrating it as marfu'; Sufyan al-Thawri and others narrated it from Ibn Ashwa' as mawquf, from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). The story of the istishraf will come later (7724-7726) with a hasan chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (1498, repeated) narrated it with the chain al-Hasan bin 'Ali from Ubayd Allah bin Musa. Grading: Al-Tirmidhi declared it "hasan sahih". Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/1061) narrated it via Waki' from Isra'il bin Yunus, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (851, 1061, 1275), Abu Dawud (2804), al-Tirmidhi (1498) and al-Nasa'i (4446, 4447) narrated it via various routes from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i.
