It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade sacrificing an animal whose ear is cut at the front (muqabalah), or cut at the back (mudabarah), or split lengthwise (sharqa'), or has a round hole in it (kharqa'), or whose ear is cut off from the root (jad'a').
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is da'if (weak), and a detailed discussion of its chain will come in the next hadith. Reference / Source: Ahmad (2/609), Ibn Majah (3142) and al-Nasa'i (4448) narrated it via Abu Bakr bin 'Ayyash, with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (4449) narrated it via Ziyad bin Khaythamah from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i. Note / Clarification: This narration will come in the next two narrations via Abu Ishaq, containing the addition about examining the eye and the ear carefully (istishraf), and its takhrij will be given there. Important point: Al-Sindi says in his commentary on Ibn Majah: "muqabalah" is an animal whose ear has been cut at the front, "mudabarah" one whose ear has been cut at the back, "sharqa'" one whose ear is split lengthwise, "kharqa'" one with a round hole in its ear, and "jad'a'" one whose nose, ear or lip has been cut (although the term is used mostly for a cut nose). Note / Clarification: A similar explanation from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i is coming in the next hadith.
