Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7717

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said to him: "We dislike a defect in the horn and the ear." Al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Dislike for yourself whatever you wish, but do not make it unlawful for people." Al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Four (kinds of animals) are not acceptable as sacrifices: the one-eyed animal whose loss of an eye is evident, the animal with one of its legs broken whose break is evident, the sick animal whose sickness is evident, and the emaciated animal that has no marrow left in its bones."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: In terms of its text (matn) this hadith is sahih, but this particular chain is da'if (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ayyub bin Suwayd and Abd Allah bin Amir al-Aslami are both weak narrators. Moreover, there is a break (inqita') or an i'dal (two narrators dropped) between Yazid bin Abi Habib and al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: For further detail, see Ibn Abi Hatim's book "al-'Ilal" (1607).
Reference / Source: Al-Ruyani narrated it in his "Musnad" (436) via al-Rabi' bin Sulayman, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (1497) narrated it via Muhammad bin Ishaq.
Important point: This narration agrees with the narration of the group of narrators from Sulayman bin Abd al-Rahman, as in the earlier narration of the author (al-Hakim), number (1736).
Note / Clarification: The word "la tunqi" means an animal so emaciated that no marrow is left in its bones. "Niqi" means bone marrow.
