Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 7716

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "O Jibril, how did you find our Eid?" He said: "The inhabitants of the heaven took pride in it. Know, O Muhammad, that a six-month-old lamb (jadha') of sheep is better than the chief (the best full-grown) of goats; and a young lamb is better than the chief of cattle; and a young lamb is better than the chief of camels. And had Allah Almighty known of a sacrifice better than it, He would have ransomed Ibrahim (peace be upon him) with it."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is very weak on account of Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Hunayni.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" declared al-Hunayni "halik" (ruined / very weak), and Hisham bin Sa'd is also not reliable. Al-Bayhaqi (9/ 271) recorded it through al-Hakim with this chain.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (8724) from Abu al-Walid Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Antaki.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Bazzar says that al-Hunayni is alone in narrating it from Hisham bin Sa'd and that no one corroborated him. The problem with al-Hunayni was that when he lost his sight and moved far from Madinah to the frontier regions, he narrated hadiths from the people of Madinah in which he was alone, and for this reason some of his narrations were declared munkar.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (128), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (1/ 341) and Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (22/ 29 - 30) via Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Hunayni.
Grading: Ibn Adi says that only al-Hunayni narrates it from Hisham bin Sa'd, and despite al-Hunayni's weakness his hadith is written down (for consideration). According to Ibn Abd al-Barr, this narration is not strong in the view of the hadith scholars, and al-Hunayni narrates munkar reports.
Note / Clarification: This narration will come later, in abridged form, under hadith no. (7735) via Abu Thifal, from Abu Hurayrah.
General principle: Ibn Abd al-Barr says that according to al-Shafi'i the camel is the best for sacrifice, then the cow, then the sheep and then the goat. According to Abu Hanifah and his companions too, the camel is the most excellent sacrifice, followed by the cow and then the goat/sheep (shah).
General principle: The evidence for this position is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The one who comes early to the Friday prayer is like one who offers a camel, then (the next) like one who offers a cow, then like one who offers a sheep" (al-Bukhari 929, Muslim 850). This makes clear that, in seeking nearness to Allah, the order of excellence is camel, cow and then sheep.
General principle: The scholars are agreed that in the "hady" (sacrifice of the Haram) the camel is the best, and on the basis of this consensus the camel is also held to be the best in the ordinary sacrifice, since both are means of seeking nearness to Allah. Also, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The best slave (to free) is the one most expensive and most precious to his owners" (al-Bukhari 2518, Muslim 84). Since the price of a camel is higher than that of a sheep, it is more excellent.
