Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to other reports), and this chain is jayyid (good).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Hasan Muhammad bin 'Ali bin Bakr is in fact "Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin 'Ali bin Bakr", and we have already discussed him under the earlier narration number (3503).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Sa'd mentioned Abd al-Rahman bin Fadalah in "al-Tabaqat" (9/ 276) in the full (non-diminutive) form (i.e. Abd al-Rahman) and gave his kunya as "Abu Umayyah". Likewise it appears in the full form in some takhrij sources, such as Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah", who said: "Abd al-Rahman is the brother of Mubarak; his hadith is collected." But in "'Ilal Ahmad" (1563 and 4564) the name appears in the diminutive form (i.e. 'Ubayd al-Rahman); there too his kunya is given as "Abu Umayyah", and Imam Ahmad declared him trustworthy.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hibban mentioned the full form (Abd al-Rahman) in "al-Thiqat" (7/ 91) and said: "He narrates from Bakr bin Abd Allah al-Muzani; Ibn al-Mubarak, Ibn Mahdi and Waki' narrated from him; and they are three brothers: al-Mubarak, Abd al-Rahman and 'Ubayd al-Rahman." Then at (7/ 92) he gave an entry for the diminutive form ('Ubayd al-Rahman) and said: "He narrates from Bakr bin Abd Allah al-Muzani, from Anas; Muslim bin Ibrahim narrated from him. There is no 'Ubayd al-Rahman among the hadith narrators other than him and al-Ashja'i, the student of al-Thawri." Only in al-Bazzar's narration does the name appear as "'Ubayd Allah bin Fadalah"; al-Bazzar said: "'Ubayd Allah bin Fadalah is a Basran, and they are brothers: al-Mubarak bin Fadalah, 'Ubayd Allah bin Fadalah and al-Mufaddal bin Fadalah; all of them narrated hadith, and there is no harm in them (la ba's bihim)." Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Kuna" (493): "Abd al-Rahman bin Fadalah - also called 'Ubayd al-Rahman - al-Basri, the brother of Mubarak"; thus al-Dhahabi treated him as one person whose name is disputed. Imam al-Bukhari turned away from these disagreements and did not name him in his narration in "al-Adab", saying only "Ibn Fadalah".
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari recorded it in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (89), al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (6762), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (2/ 230) and Qawwam al-Sunnah in "al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib" (1579), via Muslim bin Ibrahim, from Abd al-Rahman bin Fadalah, with this chain. In al-Bazzar's narration it appears as "'Ubayd Allah bin Fadalah", as has passed. Abu Nu'aym said: "This hadith is gharib from the narration of Bakr and of Abd al-Rahman; Muslim bin Ibrahim is alone in narrating it from him, and Abd al-Rahman is the brother of Mubarak; his hadith is collected."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith is also narrated from 'A'ishah herself: Imam Ahmad (41/ 24611), Muslim (2630) and Ibn Hibban (448) recorded it via 'Irak bin Malik, and Ibn Majah (3668) via Sa'sa'ah (the paternal uncle of al-Ahnaf), and both of them narrate from 'A'ishah.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (24572), al-Bukhari (5995), Muslim (2629), al-Tirmidhi (1915) and Ibn Hibban (2939) recorded something similar via 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr, from 'A'ishah, who said: A woman came to me with her two daughters, asking me (for something). She found nothing with me except a single date, so I gave it to her, and she divided it between her two daughters, then got up and left. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in and I told him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is put in charge of any of these daughters and treats them well, they will be a screen for him from the Fire."
